One of my favorite bass players and a major influence on my bass playing, died in his sleep today. :( Being a Tennessean, Stax was a little bit cooler to me than Motown and Duck was a Memphis native. Donald may have been a white boy, but he had a ton of soul and was king of the groove.

One of my favorite lines of his...Knock On Wood

What every bass player should aspire to. Duck laid down a slick groove and had the classicist of tones.
Its seems like we have lost a lot of great people from the formative rock era of late. It occurred to me recently that we are going to be memorializing more an more of them as time goes on. I am glad he went out after a double set, doing what he loved.

Duck might as well have invented rock bass. Who else plays like him any more? Who else even bothers to try?

Dang it. RIP.
