Yup, I played three sets in St Helens last night, and I got paid for playing jazz for the first time!!! Woo hoo! I am now officially ten English pounds closer to being a professional jazzer...
I was the house guitarist for a jazz jam, with two saxes, Dbl bass, drums n keys. No one gotup to play guitar, but we had a few drummers n plenty horns during the night. We played a few tunes I knew like Milestones, but mostly ones I'd never played (or, in quite a lot of cases, heard ) before. Mr PC, the theme from Alfie (love the gospel progression in that), dolphin dance, etc. I had to read charts for the ones I didn't know.
I learned soooooooooo much, and didn't get at all nervous. Heh, I even managed a passable solo on blue bossa despite totally bricking it on that tune sitting in at a Liverpool spot last Friday with some of the best players in the region (I clammed up completely then, but this time was relaxed and didn't even have a seconds doubt about playing it when it got called). I was knackered by the end, but in a lovely "I can get a good night's sleep now" kinda way. This is my biggest/longest public jazz performance, totally unprepped for, and playing with a band half of whom I'd never met before. Heck, I've only jazzed with other people these last two months!! Suffice it yo say I've plenty to work on and was far far far from perfect, but I had a seriously awesome time and am basking in the achievement/experience while being inspired to keepmoving forward.
Right, gotta go hit the practice room...those real books won't read themselves.
Congrats on that! I think you are your own worst critic. All the best!
Like a bird on the wire,
like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free.
Congrats :)
very cool. did you comp chords all night?
Should've let me know! Monday night I was sat twiddling my thumbs, a 20-minute bus ride and I could've been your official cheer-leader!
Congrats, anyway. Where did you play? Was it, by any chance, the Citadel?
Next time, let me know in advance, not after the event. So much harder to get there if you don't have a time machine, otherwise!
:D :D :D

Alright! Way to go! Very impressive. Must have been a great time. 8)

"I wonder if a composer ever intentionally composed a piece that was physically impossible to play and stuck it away to be found years later after his death, knowing it would forever drive perfectionist musicians crazy." - George Carlin
Sounds like fun! Not even sure if I know any jazz chords. I probably do, I just don't know that they are jazz chords.

The Hendrix chord is a jazz chord! :)
vic - nope note the Citadel, some random pub I'm not even sure where. I got a lift, crammed in between me guitar n a dbl bass, lmaoo (note to kids: don't try this at home - it isn't safe, and the police will follow you half the way home)
I also got well and truly schooled in a lesson yesterday. Whew. I got made to sing and it was tough work. Two hours of the best music education I've ever had, tho.
Awesome, congrats on that!! Hope you get many many more!
In Space, no one can hear me sing!
Thanks Joe! And now.....I'm back!!!!!!!!!!!
My purty shiny new MacBook Pro arrived today!
I have internet again, and a fully functioning computer. And, if things go well in my band's rehearsal on Wednesday, where I'll be testing the MacBook for recording multiple audio sources at once, I may be recording a quartet (not mine, alas) this weekend. A friend has a gig in town and it's the final one of the series. They play chilled laid back jazz standards, and it's a piano, tpt, dbl bass, and drums line up. If my computer can cope and there's time to set up adequately, I might record it as my first 'real' location test. They make great music, so it'd be nice to capture their final fours. 8)
she's back! welcome back to the net. happy to hear about your computer and your gig.
And again! Another gig tonight. In a matter of weeks I have managed to double my jazzing earnings - now made a total of £20 from jazz. Woo hoo! May have a gig lined up in May, too. This time with my band and a 'proper' gig rather than house band at a jam. That sounds much worse than I mean it to, but you know what I mean. Gotta get details ironed out on that one, tho.
