The Monterey General store gig was a great show with a great audience.

The players again:

David Hodge - guitar, vocals, mandolin
Nick Torres - guitar and vocals
Greg Nease - guitar
Karen Berger - piano
Anne O'Neil - drums
Jim Martin - bass
Joel Schick - Harmonica

Here's the set list:

Your Cheatin' Heart
Story in your eyes - Dave Brubeck Version**
Spooky
Who'll stop the rain
Stuck in the middle
Fire
lobster quadrille (a DH original, vocal DH and Me)

The Jazz Trilogy
-summertime (vocals by Anne)
-moondance (vocals by me)
-autumn leaves (vocals by Joel)

Jump Jive and Wail
Georgia
No reflection on you (a Kathy R. original, DH vocal)
One by one (one of mine)
Saturn's Moons (a DH original, DH vocal, Will Curtiss bass*)
Eurotrash Girl (with Will Curtiss bass*)
Dead Flowers (vocal by Joel)
Summer Wages
Babylon - (Flute effect by gnease which was very cool)
Pocahontas
Ophelia
Angel from Montgomery

*Will Curtiss recorded and engineered David's bass book.
**"Story in your eyes" got off track tempo wise between the two sides of the band. I split the difference so we had three tempos going on. Just in case anyone thought disasters don't happen to us.

There were several standout songs IMHO, Angel from Montgomery with David playing the cutting board/bass-o-matic/mandolin with fish attracting pheromones, Babylon, Spooky, No reflection on you, and Georgia, but Pocahontas was amazing and Eurotrash Girl with the audience joining in on the chorus was one of those moments you wish happened every time you play.

Nick, Nick, Nick ... your concentration has drifted once again: Spooky was cool -- Story in Your Eyes was the one that sucked.

And yeah, Eurotrash Girl was really cool... in that laid back, drugged out (caffeine and diet Coke?), starving artist (heh, none of us), alt country way.

The second night was fun as well. I'm sure David and Nick and Greg and Wes and John and Anne will provide the details, but I was glad to be a part of the event. As often happens live, the fast songs were played even faster, and the slow songs were a bit slower.

And it was extra special to play with Anne again - she always makes me feel like I'm playing better than I am. Lots of smiles and eye contact from the drummer are the things a bass player lives for.

Dan, you are a sweetie. It's just as much fun for me to play with you too!

Love my friends. Love playin' with y'all. Love the comaraderie. Love the laughing. Love the food. Love the love. Love it. Just love it.

Thinking about starting my own minijam group with the little people and perform on a street corner in downtown Naperville. Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

live free, love much, think deep

That's EXCELLENT! :D Sminlin' ear-to-ear hearin' about it. Oh, love it when musicians get together and rock out. Congrats all!!!

When are we going to see a report on Saturday night's festivities??? Hmm?

Falling in love is like learning to play the guitar; first you learn to follow the rules, then you learn to play with your heart.

Sorry this is several weeks late. We got some crossed wires on who was going to report what...

Anyway, the "stock" band consisted of:

Karen Berger - piano
Anne O'Neil - drums / percussion
Nick Torres - vocal / guitar
Joel Schick - harmonica / vocal
Jim Martin - bass
Greg Nease - guitar

We were joined in the second set by GN stalwarts John "the Celt" Roche and Wes Inman on guitars and Dan Lasley on bass.

The crowd was small but cool. Not many dancers but you could see folks bopping about while playing pool or sitting with their drinks.

Before we got to the gig, the stock members had dinner at a local restaurant and put together a set list that turned into a three-placemat volume on "must play songs for jam bands." This list included, but was not limited to:

You Light Up My Life
Cherish
We Built This City On Rock And Roll
Sometimes When We Touch
Playground In My Mind
Islands In The Stream
Muskrat Love
Baby Don't Get Hooked on Me
After the Loving
A medley of Mandy, Brandy and Shannon
Endless Love
Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast
Afternoon Delight
Watching Scotty Grow

...and you get the drift...

I even gave Wes one of the lists of songs, telling him it was the set list but, consummate professional that he is, he never even looked at the list.

We took the stage, I announce that we'd start out with a Debbie Boone song, and off we went...

Set 1

Rosie (an original number kind of like Jackie Wilson's Higher and Higher)
Slave To Love
Life During Wartime
Stuck In The Middle With You
Runaway
Fire
Lobster Quadrille
No Reflection on You (as mentioned earlier, this is a Kathy Reichert original)
Dead Flowers
Jump Jive and Wail
Suspicios Minds

Set 2

Brown Eyed Girl
Spooky
Thrill Is Gone
Midnight Special
Story In Your Eyes
Folsom Prison Blues
All Along The Watchtower
Wild Night
Summertime
Moondance
Let Your Love Flow

Set 3

Your Cheating Heart
Secret Agent Man
Eurotrash Girl
Bright Side of the Road
Who'll Stop The Rain
Summer Wages
Some Beach
Jump Jive and Wail (reprise)
Ophelia
I'll Be Around

I'm sure I've probably forgotten a song or two - possible Could It Be Magic or You Make Me Feel Like Dancing or I'll Tumble For You...

Heartfelt thanks for Wes, John and Dan for making the trip and taking part in the madness. Not to mention for Anne, Nick and Greg, who respectively came all the way from Chicago, Alexandria and Princeton to play music at a small bar in the middle of nowhere.

Can't wait to do it again!

Peace

Ah it sounds like a blast! When you set up your international tour be sure to include Manitoba (where you say) and I'll be there. I'll even pay for my tickets so don't feel obligated to send freebies!

That sounds awesome! I love reading posts about gigs. Makes me feel like I was there.

And we all thank David and Karen for setting up the gigs and hosting us for the weekend!

(we also somewhat sheepishly thank David for remembering what key every tune was in.)
