Ron, I love that slide of yours. Do you have to set your action really high for that? (I want a slide now!!!!)

How you set up has alot to do with to do with how you play and what type of slide you are using. For a heavier slide you would typically raise your string height to compensate for the weight of the slide, the same when you are first starting to slide you will want to raise the string height until you get used to how much pressure you need to use to get a clean sound.
When you've been doing it for a bit you can gradually lower the strings a bit at a time until you reach a balance between fretting notes and slide.
Now I use fairly heavy strings and like the action a bit on the high side so once I get the initial setup done on a guitar I can use it for either.

you can pick up a el-cheapo guitar to use for slide and raise the action a bit and put on thicker gage strings. I have a $99 acoustic that i put a pickup on and it sounds really good. A lot of the old blues men back in the 50's and 60's used just about any old pawn shop guitar they could get there hands on, My brother in law has a old Sears silvertone from the 1960's and that thang realy ROCKS :!: 8) 8) -the dog

ps: I have a old stratocaster copy that some one was going to throw away so i took it and put a dobro nut on it and use it for a lap steel, it works great and the price was right :wink:

Hey guys, thanks for all the slide advice. I have an old cheapo electric that already has 12s on it that I can mess around with. It's got pretty high action too. Any advice as to the type of slide? What types of slide did your favorite players use, Keith Richards, for instance?

Keith Richard really doesn't mess around with slide, Ronnie Wood does all the slide playing in the Stones, Mick Taylor did it before him and Brian Jones before him.
Different players I admire use different things, Bonnie Raitt, one of the current greats of slide guitar uses a Chrome Plated Steel Slide, Dwayne Allman used a medicine bottle. Jeff Beck uses a Deep Well Socket, Others have used the neck of a wine bottle (Mateus being a favorite for the long straight neck on the bottle) Eric Sardinas uses a brass slide and some company makes a branded slide of his called a Preachin Pipe. Me, I use a heavy honkin hunk of brass I found in the plumbing section my local Ace Hardware for most stuff, on occasion I also use a light piece of copper, a variety of different glass slides and a couple of ceramic ones. Tried using a socket for awhile but people wanted me to repair their cars between sets :P .

I like a thick glass slide don't get the thin ones, thay break to easily :cry: the glass is good for blues and acoustic work, the metal slide are better for hard rock, but it all comes down to what trips your trigger :D :D

I also use a Craftsman spark plug socket for my lapsteel, but i find it to heavy for regular slide use. man, Tele knows his slide players 8) 8)-the dog :D :D

Duane Allman is my all time favorite electric slide player by far, he was Gary Rossington of Lynryd Skynryd's idol... 8) And they wrote a song(Free Bird) in memory of him.. :)

Duane is mine also :D :D It just don't get any better than that !! 8) 8)

Duane was good there is no doubt, but I think like alot of others he gets a "Godlike" status because he died before his time.
