I need advice on what guitar to buy. Im a beginner and ive been playing for a few months but want to buy a new guitar, nothing too flashy or expensive as it would be wasted on me i'm such a novice! I have narrowed it to two but cannot decided the one I want, a BC Rich SOB avenge or a basic SOB bronze series. I prefer the look of the Avenge but is the single humbucker pickup at the bridge too much of a sacrifice for style and would it be rubbish? I would really like a some experienced advice on this subject. Here are URLs to both of the guitars.nAny other advice is also welcome. Thanks! :P

at first what a guitar looks like means a lot but that wears of over time and changes to what it sounds like, dont buy anything without playing it, or if your not good enough yet, get someone else to play it. sometimes you can get a good deal with a cheaper guitar but more often than not you get what you pay for, so stretch to your maximum budget cause your gonna have the guitar for quite a while, also if the guitar is a dud that can turn you off playing and therefore put you off guitar, so get the best you can afford.

with those bc rich style guitars you really pay for looks and not equipment, if your after a great rock tone maybe try an epiphone les paul or SG? or a copy of something like that, with ephiphone at least you know your quality will be better than most brands like the ones your looking at.

check out live vids of heavy metal bands and most are using the 'normal but chunky' les paul, great for rock and excellent for lead.

Hi Spreed

I'm probably the last person to advise you as I would guess I am probably old enough to be at least your father ( :D ). However, when I was buying an electric a good while back I chose to get myself an epiphone LP ((if an LP is good enough for Jimmy Page I guess it's good enough for me ..) and I have had a ball with it. Interestingly my kids all bought themselves budget electric guitars and never stuck with it. They kept complaining about a variety of problems and in particular how mine had seemed much easier to play.

Before you buy why not go to the shop and ask someone to show you one. As you've been playing for a few months you should know enough to be able to make up your own mind on what feels and sounds good.

What did the guitarist do when he was told to turn on his amp?
He caressed it softly and told it that he loved it.

Hey, Spreedmaster, welcome to GN!!!!

I found some value packs that might be a better investment let alone, perhaps better resale value or overall more flexible in playing a wider range of music.

I had one of the these when I started playing and it was a great catalyst for continuing on to more expensive gear when you feel you want something different.

I know it may not be the look that you are after but for practical usage, everything you need is right here.

Good luck with your shopping and let us know what you decide on.

First, welcome to GN!

The two packs proposed by Bish are very good starter kit, they include all the basic that you need and even more. The LP recommendations are good too, I have an Epi LP.

You did you have been playing for some months. What do you play? Electric? Acoustic? Do you have an amp? What do you want to play? For the kind of guitars, I guess hard rock or metal.

Go to a store and play all these models and then choose.

My main choice of music would be metal, but i don't want to restrict my learning to one single style with the diverse range available. I,ve always be impressed by the distinct look of a BC Rich. I really like deans and jackons too, do they play better? The advice i've been getting has really made me think that maybe I should look at the long-term so i've decided to raise my budget to about $600-900, and get something that would last me a while. I still have my heart set on a Rich as I love their look and sound. I haven't had the chance to get the feel of one though as the guitar stores around here (Backarse of Ireland) tend to stock more popular brands and models, mainly Gibson/epiphone.

The two I mainly have my eye on now are th WMD SoB and WmD Warbeast. I love the neck through design!

i still love the avenge though. Why did they make such a great looking guitar so rubbish, they should offer a neck through version with more than one pickup.

Thanks for all the advice, its a great helpas this is a really tough decision, and i know getting the right guitar is going to make the difference between casual practice and pure guitar addiction! Keep the good advice coming, thanks!
