Hi,

I'm on the look out for my first Electric. I've only been playing acoustic for a few months but I'm hooked and I'd like to try some different tunes.

I'm not into heavy rock more the indie scene and early tunes e.g. REM and the beatles.

Can anyone recommend a type of guitar that I should be looking at around the 150 to 300 range - not much I know but funds are tight. I'm very happy to go second hand.

I'd seen recommendations for Ibanez e.g. the GAX70 but I've read elsewhere that this may be geared towards heavy rock. Is that really the case?

Any help much appreciated.

both Peter Buck of REM and Lennon/Harrison of the beatles have been known to use Rickenbackers. They are wonderful guitars. But very expensive.

If your range, get yourself a Fender Standard Telecaster or Stratocaster. It'll do what you want and then some. They are the most versatile guitars around.

Yes, a Rickenbacker would be top choice, but way out of your price range. I'd consider a used Mexican-made Fender Telecaster next, played through a small Vox or Fender tube amp ... something like the 5w Fender Champion 600 will run you a mere $200.

Thanks guys - It's a mine field with the amount of equipment out there. I'll start looking at the Fender Telecasters now.

Cheers

I will second the telecaster's choice. A Fender Standard will work for first electric.

Good Luck.

For Beatles and Indie style you should check out the Semi-Acoustic Gibson 335 style guitars, Epiphone and Yamaha make nice cheaper ones.

Noel Gallagher uses them, as did George and John.

I read somewhere that some of the Beatles played the Epiphone Casino.

You could also check out some of the lower-end Gretsch guitars. Harrison played Gretsch during the early years. Yuo can get a decent set-neck Gretsch for $399.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

So a Rickenbacker's the ultimate but it does lokk way out of my price range - that'll be what I aspire to.

I've had a good look at the telecasters there are some decent deals second hand on ebay. I have to say the semi acoustic guitars do look nice though.

The Gretch - another good looking guitar - doesn't seem to come up so often second hand - ceratinly none on ebay UK.

I'm hoping to get more for my money with a preloved version.

Thanks again to everyone. - I gues the buy one of everything comment is exactly how I feel.

You can get Epiphone dots cheap, then there are the Casino and Sheratons for around £400
