While I'm here, I've got a chance to treat myself following my 40th a couple of weeks ago and Mrs Me has okayed a big spend.
So I'm thinking of either a Gibby SG or a Firebird, now I've read all the good SG reviews (Wes seems to like his! ) but I like the look of the FB especially as I love Skynyrd and that Southern thing!
Anyone here got one or played one, any opinions on the V vs the VII etc?

Thanks
Jim

Hi :D

I was recently (and briefly) entertaining the idea of acquiring one.

I myself like the VII.

What I found was that most people didn't care for the middle pup.
They thought the tone was useless... and with 3 pups, there is no 2 pup blend as per usual on Gibbos.
I couldn't help wondering if it was actually a decent sounding pup, as I LOVE the mid pup on my 71 Strat the best.

Also - the Lyre Vibola on the VII seemed to have less sustain than a regular stop tailpiece. (Also found that SG people
complained of the same thing when comparing the two tailpieces on the 61 SG RI's)
(And I had a 63 SG with a Vibola and it had no sustain, so that is probably true)

The Mini Humbuckers on the Firebird RI's are up for debate.
Some people adored them, while others thought they were really cheap sounding.
Guess you'd have to play one to know if they suited your tone taste.
It in no way sounds like a LP.... if that's what you're looking for.

At any rate, more people seemed to think that the V was better.
(And it comes in sunburst :D )
