Nylon string guitars often get viewed as not being quite up there with the Fenders and Gibsons of this world, but did you know that a hand-made Classical Guitar can cost you more than a new car? You'll need to buy a microphone and amplifier separately too.

For those of us who want a Classical Guitar, but don't want to sell our children for medical experiments, I recommend two manufacturers:

Alhambra guitars (I have a model 4P) will set you back anywhere between £200 and £1,100. Most have solid tops, with the higher-spec models having spruce tops.

Admira Guitars - the "Teresa" model sells for around £425 and sounds exceptional. Otherwise, they retail from £100 upwards and are perfect for the student
