Ok, here's a question :?: How do you record your music and if you use a computer, what software do you use :?: --the dog
I use line in and cakewalk homestudio. I wish I had a mixer but in all due honesty I don't require anything even moderately good for recording yet.
Guitarin' isn't a job, so don't make it one.
For hardware I used a Mobile Pre USB to record my guitar. For vocals I have a MXL Condenser mic I think.
Usually, I first record drums using Hammerhead. Its alot easier for me to play to drums than a click track. I save that off as an MP3 and then import it into Audacity as a track of its own.
Next I record my guitar part. There are several ways i do this. Sometimes I just play the whole thing all the way through. I might go back afterwards and replay parts that I mess up on then use the editing controls to cut out the bad part and add in the new. I have also recorded where I just play a few beats of the rythem and then copy and paste it. Only hard part about that is where there are changes. I used lots of tracks and takes in doing the guitar since I am not very good yet.
Next comes vocals. There are times I use Audacity for vocals but if I am not being lazy then I use Krystal for the vocals. I like the effects with it better for vocals. First I record the lead vocal parts and import that into audacity. Then go back and re-record vocals and just do any background vocals.
Lastly, I adjust any effect and make sure the sound levels are good before converting it to MP3.
I think the most important thing is using LOTS of tracks. Have everything you can on seperate tracks. More importantly is making sure that you save often and to different file names so that you can go back if you need to.
That was a great question Ken

I had never heard of Hammerhead until you just mentioned it. Cool, thanks...
Ken, mine is simple.
CURRENT:
Recording: Electric Guitar > M-Audio Mobile PreUSB in > PC = Kristal Audio Engine
Monitoring: With above M-Audio Mobile PreUSB out > Amp CD in
I also use Audacity as an external editor to Kristal for some editing and to create mp3's
Since this setup does not pick up the amp sounds or acoustic I also use a mic sometimes.
FUTURE:
Future plans are to get a new Behringer V Amp LX112 (lots of modeling and effects) and a mixer. And set it up
Guitar > Amp out > Mixer > M-Audio Mobile PreUSB in > PC = Kristal Audio engine
very simple....
Audacity.
Guitars I record by playing through an amp, acoustics through mic, vocals through mic....
I do have an 8-track Tascam mixer, but I haven't got round to wading through 75 pages of manual yet.....
I was once advised, "never buy a piece of electronic hadware where the manual is bigger or heavier than the hardware".....

I have a tascam 424 mk 3 cassette deck that I mostly use for a mixer ( it has a nice mixer section) With that I use a mxl condenser mic ( it uses a 9volt battery or I can use my behringer mixer with phantom power) I also have a sm 57 for amps and acoustics, sometimes i will record the amp direct or with one or both mics or one mic and direct. The mixer goes into my M-Audio firewire then to my pc( hp a1034n) 1 gig memory 160 gig hard drive. I mostly use audacity, I haven't got used to Crystal yet. The process i use is similar to geoo's. I use various drum tracks, hammerhead and even midi files sometimes--the dog

Now he tells us. That's been the problem with my 8 track. I'm on page 47 and it's telling me to unwrap the power cord and plug into receptical on back of recorder. This is going to take awhile.

DOH forgot to respond to the question.
Everything I have lately has been by recommendation of the vast knowledgable folks here. Before coming here I knew less than nothing. Now I just know a little less than before.
I have Audacity and Kristal but have used Audacity more. I record to that via my sound card that came with my most recent computer (first one I haven't built for myself so not sure of the brand) So far I've only recorded a small assortment of ditties from my limited guitar ablilities but fun, none the less.
I also have purchased some pretty nifty recording hardware and software but have yet to disembark it from it's shipping boxes. I've been too busy to even open the boxes. Brand and model to be determined at a later date so I have much more to share soon. Hopefully...

CakeWalk Sonar 4
If you want to see my gear (mixer and what not) go here and click on the two pages of gear I have. My Mobile Pre is on the top of my desk. :D I have more dynamic mic's and stands but, my studio/room is clutered too much to leave them out all the time.
AKG mikes into a Tascam 414 Mk II portastudio, then out to the PC running Audacity. I'd like the Tascam or Yamaha 24-track but haven't got a grand lying around doing nothing.
Best,

That's a good one for a mixer also :D For what your doing a upgrade in the sound card would make more sense anyway IMHO, Ive heard some good things about AKG mikes also :D
I use audacity, and an old lapel mic from a voice recongnition program I was playing with. I clip the mic to an empty guiness bottle for my mic stand.
Immature? Of course I'm immature Einstein, I'm 50 and in a Rock and ROll band.

Why an empty bottle. Use a full one and get that chorus or phaser effect by moving it 8)
