Save some guitar-buying moneys before looking online at sexy jazzboxes you want to own. Now, I can't help imagining having some thing like this in my hands - http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_ak105smabr.htm

or this http://www.thomann.de/gb/ibanez_ak100_nt.htm

or even this http://www.sadowsky.com/instruments/hall_model.html

or one of these - http://www.benedettoguitars.com/model_bravodeluxe.php

I also like this one - http://www.benedettoguitars.com/model_andy.php prefer the aesthetics of that one, but I think I'd prefer to play the Bravo Deluxe....

Okay, my financing plan for this is
(1) Win the lottery.
(2) Start playing the lottery.

Anyone know any decent banks with low security?

downside of getting the Benny or Sadowsky: you will end up buying the Artcore anyway, as you will be afraid to gig with either of the others.

alt plan …

get the Artcore; get f'ing good; play with everyone; get f'ing great; get noticed; get asked to front a signature model for B or S.

In Liverpool, I'd actually feel a bit safer gigging with the B or S than an Ibanez - more people (read: louts) would recognise the name of the Ibanez and would be more likely to think that was worth nicking than a Benedetto or Sadowsky.

So, I'd get the Artcore for when I wanted to look like a flash git.

think my current thinking is get artcore full hollow, plus artcore semi. then get really f'ing good and/or win lottery and/or rob bank, then get both B and S.

now, I just need to pick those two artcores........

I ended up going Gretsch, which was an entirely different monster than the Ibanezes I looked at. This one, which I think is a Musician's Friends' exclusive, has caught my eye for about a year now.

Something about P-90s, the Bigsby, the gold on maroon scheme...the whole package just looks good to me.

others:
Epi Casino -- always a fave
Godin 5th Avenue Kingpin and Kingpin II (ding ding ding!)

played a Kingpin for the first time yesterday -- love the feel and vibe, and esp the acoustic tone. it's also sold as an acoustic-only. very trad jazzworthy, but with a bit of modern. … and P90(s)! preferred to the (very nice) Artcore AFS75T hanging right next to it.

all are full hollow. Casino is thinline and AFS is thinner-than-full-depth

Do you ever have trouble with the P90s and feedback with the semi-hollows? Granted that he was playing the blues, but the lead guitarist I play with had to give up his P90s because they were almost impossible to control.

not in a semi. I have P90s in two Squier 51's, a Tele (all obv solids), as well as a semi-hollow Reverend Slingshot -- no FB issues with any of them, and the P90s are of various manufacture from custom to knock-off. I play John M's Casino (P90 and full hollow) once in a while. now THAT is a FB monster.

I don't think most semi-hollow guitars are really very much different from solid bodies. I've played some solid bodies that have better acoustic tones and resonant timbres than most semis. it's the free-vibrating top of a full hollow that really closes the loop on feedback. that doesn't really exist in most semi designs.

your lead player may have had some excessively microphonic P90s. that's a +/- thing, mitigated by potting the pup coil. what type of guitar was he playing?

It was some sort of special Epi, and may have been more hollow than semi. He actually traded it in for a Heritage semi, which he likes a lot and is well behaved; we've stopped ragging on him. He brought the Epi to a gig and was embarassed by not being able to keep it under control. You can ask him for more details next time you see him...
