Okay, I want to tap. Specifically, there is one track I want to play which requires tapping. Really difficult tapping too, not beginner's tapping. Consider it a personal challenge. so I've been doing. Little messing with the technique of tapping, but I'm not progressing as fast as I'd like.
I could do with some exercises and/or songs that will take me from my baby taps to some fully grown eight-finger magic tapping. And I figure the best folk to ask are those who will be posting below...(I hope)
Thank you thank you thank you.
Here you go Sara:

Lesson 5 will get you were you want to go!

That was... fantastically weird!
Thank you for a bright spot today!! :D
What I lack in talent and natural ability, I will have to make up with stubborness.
Wanna be shredder ?
Then you need to follow my ideal - Buckethead. And, don't forget the bucket. 8)
That freaked me out I couldn't watch it all and I have no idea why anyone would want to sound like him
Btw what is the song you are aiming to play with the tapping?
together we stand, divided we fall..........
eventually I want to be able to ply Jennifer Batten's version of Coltrane's Giant Steps, but it requires eight finger tapping and is, well, a little advanced shall we say. I don't expect to be playing it anytime soon, but coulddo with tapping-centred songs or exercises to work on while I develop my technique. Only problem is, I don't know much shredder music, and that's where's lot of tapping seems to be on show.

It's supposed to be a joke, and I posted it as a joke as well. If you ever listen to any of his music though, you would hear how he can work some of that stuff in & make it sound good.
Sara, sorry I can't help more, I can only do simple EVH style tapping, (never thought I'd refer to EVH tapping as simple the 1st time I heard Eruption!), but there are a lot of tapping vids on Youtube that may help you out a bit. Good luck! :D

First, some non-shred tapping inspiration:

Next, some lessons, more shred-oriented:

You could try Satriani Midnight thats a fun two handed tapping piece
together we stand, divided we fall..........
killer bass on the Stanley Jordon video. KILLER.
y'know, I was under the assumption that tapping was just Shredder/high gain amp stuff.
then I see videos like that and forget about a lot of other acoustic and clean/electric tappers.
I always try the rudiment tapping stuff and cannot get the sound I want.
I can't tap. I can't jitterbug either.
I can waltz and tango.
I can play two note harmonic scales and love double stops.
but I can't tap.
best wishes Scrybe.
thanks guy, will be checkin out the vids and working on this a lot! I also like how Antonio Forcione uses tapping (and perussive elements) on guitar.
One thing...I've read (years back) that resting your thumb on the neck (a la Jordan in much of that vid) improves accuracy, and my own experiments support this. But I can't help thinking not resting the thumb in this way gives you more freedom to maneouvre, so I've been making a point not to rest the thumb (doesn't seem to hold SJ back on electric, but AF gets better acoustic results not resting he thumb than I do when resting my thumb....tho that's a loaded Q!). Any tips for improving accuracy without resting my thumb on the neck? Or general observations/suggestions about the pros and cons of using that technique when tapping? Props guys!
Check out some of Antoine Dufour's music. He is an amazing musician. He uses different tapping techniques in much of his music.

BTW, Dan, I've seen Buckethead in a small theater in NJ. He was amazing.

thanks blueline, will do.
Also, I recall that rappers often use damping devices near the nut of their axe to prevent unwanted noise. I'm not gonna do that, but I've noticed tapping sounds nicer if you mute the string with your "fretting hand" or are fretting complimentary notes with that hand. I take it muting is something which always needs focus and isn't just being caused by my amateurishness?
OT - I can play the intro to Hey Joe left handed! And upside down Albert King left handed too!! Ok so it sounds really crud, but I'm a rightie an I can play leftie. Heh.
