It's entirely possible that alcohol was involved.

Morons and drunks always seem to survive relativley unharmed no matter what idiocy they perpetrate

I heard of some local morons who tried the same trick with a big plastic garbage bag filled with oxyacetylene mixture. They took it out to a field on the edge of some woods, fused it with toilet paper and got back a way to see what would happen. Got a much bigger blast than they expected, which stripped all the leaves off of nearby trees in the woods and rocked a nearby subdivision. They got away with it without harming anyone and won't try that again.

That's a small version of the fuel-air bombs used so successfully by the U.S. Air Force to clear minefields in the recent Middle Eastern wars they've been involved in. Powerful stuff. Don't try this at home, kids.

One of the nurses I work with came in new years eve and told me that her "idiot husband and his red neck friends" ( this was her quote) were filling garbage bags with oxyacetylene and putting them in old cars and blowing them up  I do have to admit, I would have liked to see that  --after blowing up 4 cars they decided that had better quit before something bad happened ( like His wife whooping the crap out of him when she got home)
