I have a mini les paul and i need to know the best tuning to use. Standard tuning makes the strings to tight for playing.

The most common thing to with with short scale 'mini' guitars is to tune it to standard tuning but at a higher pitch.
For example (low to high) G C F Bb D G - in this case you will get a "G" chord if you finger an "E" chord, everything is transposed three half steps up.
I don't understand what you mean by "standard tuning makes the strings too tight for playing" - if you tune a short scale guitar to standard pitch with the strings you normally use, the string tension should bee too loose, not too tight. Is your guitar equipped with extra heavy gauge strings?

Maybe he's going for standard an octave up?
