I picked up a little slide book that introduces the common tunings and came with a CD. This is the very first etude in it. It's recorded at at around 140 bpm!!! (actually 70 as it is written) IMO that's silly for a rank novice. So I recorded my own backing at 120. If I were to record it again I'd do it at 100, at that speed I'm able to dampen stuff a lot better.

But at this point I just never want to perform - or hear - this little melody again. Behold my last perfomance of it...

Sliding Rocks

Nothing to write home about, but in order to do this I learned a lot of stuff

  • I had choose between bottleneck vs. bar slide. For simple melodies like this I think I prefer the steel bar.

  • I had to learn to read G tuning.

  • For some reason, lap style gives me back pain very quickly. Might try setting the guitar up on a table. It's easy to see how pedal steel was born.

  • Right now I'm using a strat for slide, the upper horn gets obnoxious after awhile. Now I want a Firebird...

  • I don't know much about music, but one thing I am absolutely certain of - you don't just pick up a guitar slide and expect to make music with it right away.

nice tone and it sounds like you are riding a wild beast. welcome to slide.
there are lttle things one can do to tame the beast and get it to do what you want.
    string damping is one technique.
you did fine for a first try.
