playing a song such as 'in my time of dying' - led zeppelin, im wanting to ask what the best technique to use it to play open notes alongside fretting notes( ie B------3--5---0-3--5).When sliding, lifting the slide off the strings always results in unwanted noises, so whats the best technique to play a string on notes like this cleanly?

damping will stop unwanted string noise. putting a slide down on a vibrating string makes that noise.
I damp with both hands. the palm mute or damp with the picking hand is easiest for me. just lay your fleashy heel of the palm against the strings near or on the bridge.
right hand damping is trickier. you use your fingers behind the bar to stop the vibrating string(s).

like anything else guitar, it becomes natural after a while.
