I saw this assignment while my daughter was listening to "Don't Let Me Get Me" by Pink and I had just finished practicing "Great Big Sea" [aka What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor] and out of that mix came this mess......
A......A/d...A.......A/d...............................E7
save me...save me..save me Lord from myself
E7......................................................A
I'm my own worst enemy...can't blame no one else
spare me...spare me...spare me from my sins
let me shed, shed this skin...so I can start again
save me...save me...save me from this destiny
show me I can be redeemed...take my slate, wipe it clean
spare me...spare me...spare me from God's left hand
lead me off this path I'm on....drive me to the promised land
save me...save me..save me Lord from myself
I'm my own worst enemy...I'm pleading for your help
......A....A/d...E7
E....x.....x.....0
A....0.....0.....2
D....2.....0.....0
G....2.....2.....1
B....2.....2.....0
e....0.....0.....0
Great idea providing the chords. :D
I thoroughly enjoyed singing it and fiddling around with different arrangements.
My first thought was that it might sound a bit like Amazing Grace, because I have a teaching CD that uses the same chords - just A, D and E. It also has a similar theme of redemption and new start.
But of course when I sang it it came out nothing like that at all.
Simple lines, well used phrases, and yet it seemed to do the job very well.
I don't know why, but I ended up singing it through a number of times. Maybe I need saving.
Hey PORR,
Nice, simple, straight-forward song. My only critique is that, if you're going for a Christian song, that market is already saturated with the phrase "I'm my own worst enemy" or phrases like it. I don't have any replacement off-hand, but I like Caedmon's Call's line: "I'm running from the very clothes I'm wearing." It doesn't fit exactly, but I hope it sparks some ideas for you.
