If you're used to 4string 5 string can be a bit confusing at first. For the rest 5 string has just advantages. Most importantly that bass-runs going from somwhat high to way low are far easier to play since you can play those using the 5string instead of moving your hand to use the 4th string.

Hmm I don't know about bass' but I'd assume the strings are less spaced out on a 5 string...

Is the "extra" string higher, or lower?

In most cases, it's lower (B). It's legal to make it higher (C), but a stock 5-string bass will be set for the lower B and thus you may need to make a new nut.

If you've don't mind paying the extra, I'd get a 5-string.

Not necessarily. Most 5 strings have a wider neck, and have close to the same string spacing as that of a 4.

Yeah, the only disadvantage is that you need a very good amp to be able to reproduce the low frequiences of the lower notes of the low B string. If your amp can't ahndle it, then the extra low notes are useless.

This is what I was looking at. Very middle of the road, but for a price I can handle right now. This with a low b can anyone tell? Couldn't tell by tech description.

You can be confident that the "standard" 5-string has a low-B.

That's a pretty nice bass, and Peavey is a decent brand.

I decided to buy it, even though I know I'll need a little more powerful amp. Any one have some suggestions? Hopefully under 200 bucks :?

This is more like three bills, but is getting some great street buzz in the compact bass amp category:

Roland Bass Cube

Very good for practice and smaller gigs

I would love to get a fiver with a high C. Would probably help on my lead lines.
