Behringer BX1200 Ultrabass is a 1x12 120 Watt amp for $250 US. It offers a lot for the price.
BPMmusic.com had a few Roland BassCube's left not long ago for $230 US. They are only 30 watts, but offfer a very good tone and effects range. If more volume is needed you can mic it, like I am doing mine.
In your price range, there are not a whole lot of others worth buying, IMO.

I just checked XE.com (a currency converter) and $300 Canadian converted to $227.24 US. So I still recomend the two mentioned earlier.
