I've recently have taken up the bass and I'm seeking advice on where to begin. My goal is to be able to write bass lines for original songs. I have played guitar for years and I am currently taking lessons.

If you want to learn how to write your own basslines a good start would be to buy a bass guitar music book from a music store and study some of the lines, you'll begin to see how bass lines are made.

I don't really play bass, but I have written quite a few bass lines. Sometimes I've used riffs similar to the guitar lines, othertimes it was totally different. I would just advise you to play around the key that your song is in, and build on riffs. Maybe play more or less complex versions of what the guitar is doing. If there is no guitar, make the bass shine. Just try to make sure the bass don't contrast the rest of the song to much, you don't want it to sound out of tune.
