my 5 year old wants a guitar, but I'm thinking playing a bass might be better for him (less strings). any comments

I suggest guitar. I don't think a five year old has got big enough hands, or the finger strength to play bass. Its quite hard work. Just because it has fewer strings doesn't make it any easier I'm afraid.
I suggest a 3/4 size nylon string guitar, it should be about the right size for a 5 year old, and they are good to start on, unless he really wants to play bass!
I wish that I had started that young. I hope it goes well.

Uklele! That's pretty close to being a childsize guitar with fewer strings. That's got to work ;D
