Learning requires a willingness to be bad at something for awhile.

Yes, and they are very good. :D
But if anyone has more outside this that they recommend, the more the merrier!

I recommend you the David's book. The book is very good for learning and understanding bass and also general music theory. It has lots of exercises and tips but you will not only learn specific patterns or songs, you will understand why are you doing it. It is not expensive and you will be busy a long time. (And remember to use a link from this site if you buy it in Amazon.)
Now, there are some sites with bass lessons. Besides this site, sometimes I read or use:
These are all good suggestions. For free bass guitar lessons for beginners, I would also recommend http://www.bass-guitar-music.com
Here is the direct link to the beginner lessons page:

I am still a beginner, too. If anyone else knows of where I can find some free basic lessons, I appreciate new ideas.
Bassman7, the server seems down. :?:
And then of course there's my friend James "Wheat" Martin's free, online Bass Book, a comprehensive guide to all things bassy. And did I mention it's free and on line?

You're right - I also had trouble accessing it. The site was having some server issues last weekend, but appears to be up and running now: http://www.bass-guitar-music.com/bass-lessons.html
They have some free online bass guitar lessons for beginners, and a few for intermediate players, too.

Nice site! It has several cool tips!
Thanks!
As mentioned above http://www.studybass.com is the best beginner bass lessons I have seen online, keeps everything really simple and easy to learn and understand.
Be very careful when going to:
http://wheatsbassbook.org/
In order to download the full book you will be directed to a site that says it's collecting your information just to give you access to a 5 day free trial.
After collecting your credit card information, you are directed to troyplay.com, an online streaming website, which has nothing to do with bass lessons. After the trial period you will be charged a monthly fee for that service.
If you're sucked in...Don't be fooled by the cancellation page. It says you will be charged $1 to cancel the service quickly. DON'T fill out the page. Call the toll free number and cancel for free.
