I totaly agree with every one here and I would like to add that sometimes self esteem comes into play. I you can't feel good about what your doing it will always be harder. When I was new at guitar I had an acoustic guitar that the strings seemed to be a foot off the neck and yes it hurt and I would get discouraged, then I met a guy who changed how I felt about my playing by giving me an alternative tuning.
Next thing I knew I was wizzing around the neck making music with just a couple fingers and within a couple of days of this my resolve to learn barre chords became firm. When I would become discouraged I would go back to that tuning and just jam.
Later I met another teacher who just asked me one question, What do I want to learn? And guess what that was what he taught me.
Take heart and find an open tuning that will allow you to make creative sounds easily and just take some time to jam and then when you feel better about your self those barre chords will seem to get easier.
