Am I correct that when playing chords the upstrum is limited to the offbeat only?

I have been assuming that when someone writes a strumming pattern in 4/4 like: D/U D/U U D/U , there is a downstrum not played on the 3rd beat and the upstrum is hit on the way back up.

However, when experimenting with different patterns there seems to be a place for upstrums played on the beat as well.

Thanks for any advice.

You can play an upstrum on the beat as well.

Have a look at the lesson Keeping Time by Noteboat.

I got through about 3/4 of it last night. Very good article; but made my head hurt a bit trying to get some of the rhythms. :)

Bennett,

Thanks for pointing out that article by NoteBoat. I'll practice what he suggests today. :)

More great info and suggestions from NB (hmmm NB means NoteBoat and also "Nota Bene" - Latin for 'note well', or 'take notice'. Rather appropriate...).

Dashing looking devil in his performing outfit in the pic too, isn't he. Must have some faults.... grumble... grumble..
