I've played an acoustic guitar for about a year so far. The other day I was at my local music store and asked the guy there for a good beginner electric guitar that had a heavy sound to it. He pointed out to me an Epiphone G-400. I'd like to know if this is a nice guitar to start with.

If you have already been playing guitar in general for about a year why get a beginner guitar? You are only going to want to get a better one VERY soon after you get that one?

How much do you want to spend? What kind of music do you want to play?

I wouldn't call the G-400 a "beginner" guitar. You might want to check for 'neck dive' on it though.

Try all the ones in your prices range. Pretty much anything with humbuckings will do the trick for you if you want heavy.

I'm looking for a guitar in the $400-$600 range for heavy metal music.

Thanks for the links missleman and Primeta.
Tracker, what do you mean by 'neck dive'?

Neck dive?? Can you explain what that means?

Neck dive means the neck has a lot of weight to it. When you strap the axe to you and without touching the guitar, the neck goes south because of the weight.

I don't know if that is the case with the G-400, but it is with the SG's and the G-400 shares the same design.

I wonder if the neck dive has anything to do with button placement. As most guitars will have the strap button on the upper horn I think the SG models have it behind and towards the center line of the guitar, which would be level with the bottom button. That would definately give it improper balance. Never strapped one on (so to speak) so I don't really know.

Check out Schecters in this range. Omen 6, Blackjack and a couple other models. GREAT guitars for the money.

If you've been playing guitar for a year, don't get a beginner guitar.
