But...its just tons of base in the background that I cant really hear when he changes or strums... ehhh.....

btw...does it just take practice to get the strum patterns right. I can change between all the major chords and 7ths with ease and quickness...im missing strumming patterns though...I guess timming really is everything.

The way I play it is (in my layman's terms, i hope it's clear)...
For each chord
Strum, plam mute, palm mute...repeat that 3 times, then go to the next chord. it's just power chords, i think the same 4 chords over and over.
And maybe I'm wrong, but I think there is no bass in the song, it's just Gavin and his guitar. So just go with the feeling of the song and let it flow.
