when i put a capo on any fret of my accoustic. it starts to sound a bit like a bandjo. Is that normal?

If 'sounds a bit like a banjo' means higher pitched, that's normal. If it means it sounds tinny, that's not normal...

You might be placing the capo in the wrong spot. Stay 1/4" or so behind the fret - if you get right up to the fret, you'll put a crimp in the strings, and you'll find you won't have proper intonation after you take it off.

Other possibilities: the capo might not have enough pressure - try using one of a different type... and your strings may be just touching frets when the capo is placed - if that's the case, you should hear the same thing when you fret a note without the capo; listen closely, and if that's happening take it to a shop for adjustment.
