I've never really worked on this...until today. I realized that by practicing scale patterns exclusively i've for the most part worked only 3 of my four fingers at one time. When I tried simple 1-2-3-4 chromatic scale fingerings I had trouble.

What are the benefits of working on chromatic scales?

Thanks. KY

I guess the major ones are pretty obvious, but I'll say them anyways. Gets your coordination going, helps to improve finger strength all around the neck, simple exercise to improve alternate picking, and it gets your pinky in the mix.

I have just strated back playing and I do the above runs to teach my fingers. I the past I never learned learned to use the pinky sans the G cord. I am teaching my daughter the chromatic runs so that she can get some strength in her hands and learn to use all 4 fingers. It is helping, both her and I. I am amazed at how many songs use the pinly thrown in on the chord as a change. The Dsus4 I see a lot.

I literally started with chromatic scales and did them for two month. after that I discovered the pentatonic with blue notes on these page and mostly use this because it just sounds a bit more interesting. I have to say I still do chormatic once in a while and I think I might inlcude them in everyday exercice because they really did me some good for finger strengh and coordination!
just my little story

NO MORE THEORY!!

What sort of excercises are you doing? Chromatic scale is just all the notes, isn't it?

Are you just playing every fret in the first 5 frets sequentially?

I have quite a few chromatic exercizes, scales and runs and whatnot. these are the ones that i use every time i practice
1 2 3 4
1 2 4 3
1 3 2 4
1 3 4 2
1 4 2 3
1 4 3 2
2 1 3 4
2 1 4 3
2 3 1 4
2 3 4 1
2 4 1 3
2 4 3 1
3 1 2 4
3 1 4 2
3 2 1 4
3 2 4 1
3 4 1 2
3 4 2 1
4 1 2 3
4 1 3 2
4 2 1 3
4 2 3 1
4 3 1 2
4 3 2 1
for coordination. sometimes i hammer on/ pull off for this exercise.
this is one that got me comfortable with hammer/pulls
0h1h2h3h4p3p2p1p0
this one is a bit harder.. i used to pick between every fret change, but now i can do it without having to
0h1p0h2p0h3p0h4p0h3p0h2p0h1p0
1h2p1h3p1h4p1h3p1h2p1
2h3p2h4p2h3p2
3h4p3
2h3p2h4p2h3p2
1h2p1h3p1h4p1h3p1h2p1
0h1p0h2p0h3p0h4p0h3p0h2p0h1p0

these are pretty advanced but at low tempos can be fairly easy.

REMEMBER ANY PRACTICE SHOULD BE STARTED AT A LOW TEMPO... MUCH MUCH SLOWER THAN YOU COULD IMAGINE, AND STAY COMPLETELY RELAXED AND COMFORTABLE AS YOU CAN HURT YOURSELF OTHERWISE
