hey guys i dunno if anyone has seen hail hail rock and roll a film about chuck berry. well during the film clapton is discussing chuck berry style fills and solos that are charachterized by 2 strings, he says they make his style sound fuller and "just more right"

-my question is that is there any structure or music theory behind that style of play? and if it does where would i start? does it match into scales somehow?? thanks guys

good question. I seriously doubt Chuck Berry was thinking about music theory when he played those double stops. I bet he created that style to stand out from the rest of the guitar players. it got the attention of Keith Richards, as he said Berry was a major influence.
when I began playing guitar I copied Richards licks;plying two strings with one finger mashing them down and sometimes bending them. of course, one could break down the seemingly improvised style by talking theory; intervals, harmonic scales etc.

Definitely there is, he uses a combination of three ideas: Minor Pentatonic Double stops, Playing major 3rds against minor, and sometimes 2 of three notes in the chord triad itself, as on Johnny B Goode between the Chorus Lyrics.

it's usually playing the main melody note and another note a 3rd or 4th above it, often the same fret one string higher, which is what dogbite mentioned. you choose notes from the scale of the song or solo. you can play double stops(2 notes at once) using any two notes, but that's usually how chuck berry and the blues guys go about it. there's also another technique of bending a note up to a note that you're playing simultaneously on the higher string, but that one's tougher to master.

yeah. a great technique. here is where you hold one string (note) still and bend the other string. this is a tried and true technique in country too. maybe more so.
