an effects loop is a channel on an amlifier where you plug your pedals in.

most combo amps only allow you to plug your pedals into one or two inputs on the amp.
that makes everything go into the preamp first and them to he output side.

some feel that isnt the best way. so a loop input was added between the preamp stage of the amp and the output side.

Ive no experience with that. it makes sense tho. in terms of hopw an amp powers up the tubes and amplifies the signal.

I dont have the technical expertise to explain further.

Basically, a pre-amp conditions the incoming signal to be optimum for the power amp stage. The input could come from a record player, a cd player, a radio receiver, a guitar, a microphone, or any other device. Most of these will have different signal strengths and impedances. A pre-amp will convert all of the varying signals to one that the power amp can make best use of.
However, that means that any equalisation or any effects can only come before or during the pre-amplification. The effects loop breaks into the chain and allows the outgoing signal, from the pre-amp, to be modified by an Eq or have other effects added, before going in to the power amp. Some effects don't sound good if the effect is put through distortion or overdrive, so you add the overdrive/distortion, before sending the signal out to the effects, in the fx loop.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

It's main purpose is being able to place effects either before or after the preamp (distortion). For example, a wah in your effects loop sounds much different then a wah before the amp's input.
