I've noticed during tuning, there is an E2, E3, E4, A2, A3, A4, etc. The guitar is supposed to be tuned on the E2, A2 etc. What exactly do the numbers after the letter mean?
Unless I'm mistaken, they are the octaves based around middle C. Middle C is C0, on octave higher is C1, two octaves up is C2, etc. The other tones (A, B, etc.) take their numbers from C.
The same goes for the octaves lower than C, but the notation is usually that those higher than C have the numbers superscripted (C²) and those lower than C have the numbers subscripted.

I always thought it to be octaves based on an 88 key piano.
Piano ranges from A0 - C8
Most Guitars range from E3 - C6
