This is an old 60's song that has an intro of 3 chords
E,D,A
The sheet music has a rest, eighth note for the E, quarter note for E, D, and E.
And then repeats the pattern over and over. I would really like to get this.

When I play this, it doesn't sound like the intro I have for the mp3 of the song (Van Morrison song by the group Them).
I'm missing a strum pattern or something? There's definitely more than 4 beats in that pattern when I listen to the song.

What am I doing wrong?
Anyone want or need the mp3, I'll send it to them if you would like to hear the original song (to help).

It's the rock that gives the stream its music . . . and the stream that gives the rock its roll.

That reads like the treble staff for a piano version.
On guitar IIRC one bar is: 4 1/8 notes E, 1/4 note D and then 2 1/8 (or 1 1/4?) notes A.

Thanks, I'll try that.
I was just going to edit my post after listening and counting notes and there are seven.
A rest and then count outload to seven fits the pattern nicely.
So it's 4 E's, a D and then 2 A's?
As far as strumming? DU pattern?
What's IIRC?

That's right all 1/8 notes except the D which is a 1/4. No rests.
I'd probably strum it all downstrokes, except the As. There you have to get back to the E in a hurry, so DU.
IIRC is IF I Recall Correctly :)

OK, I think I've got it.

E: quarter note and then 2 eighth notes
D: quarter note (or 2 eighth notes?)
A: 2 eighth notes
repeat

I think that's it.

Hi :D

I find that instead of playing the A chord twice,
it works out well to hit it once, then make no chord - hiting the open strings with an up stroke....
Then hammer on to the E chord.

It fits in nicely with the 'rest' (pause) in the progression.
It almost sounds as if your sliding into the I chord after pausing on the IV.

Anyway
Good luck.

Gloria is a GREAT song!

Hi,
Back again.

Um....
The E chord is sorta held and loosly strummed,
Then the D & A chords are sorta staccato, like exclamation marks! !

That's how I do it anyway.

Hope that helps,

Ken's jogged my memory. :)
I'm pretty sure the intro goes the way I described and then once Van kicks in, you get that staccato flavour Ken's outlined.
Here's the author and another famous guy giving it a whole new twist:

four E's
one D one A.
that's how Ive done it for a hundred years.
D/U for the E's.
I play the Them version since it came out when my first teen band started. .
