On some amps gain just means volume, but from what you're describing, it likely means just what you said: distortion level: more gain = more distorted signal. I'll spare you all the yammering about preamps and gain stages, but you can look into that if you want.

As to what the middle control is... in child's terms it's what's between the treble and the bass: the mid frequencies. If you're familiar with your ordinary parametric equalizer (lots of little sliders, very common on boom boxes and home stereo systems) think of your bass/mid/treble as an equalizer with only 3 sliders.

Hope this helps you out... :D

Here is an article that discusses tone controls on your amp, especially comparing Fender vs. Marshall.

There is also a link for Overdrive and Distortion that should discuss gain.

You can turn the gain knob?

What.....anticlockwise?

I'll have to try that - see what my amp sounds like when the gain's not on 10.

I will say that most Gain controls are used to boost the pre-amp stage of the guitar amp. The more gain used the more distortion that can be created. The Volume control or Master Volume will set the output stage volume. With the right combination of Gain and Volume, mixed with a little tweaking of the tone controls will give you a full palette of sounds and tone.

Don't ever worry about asking questions. That is what GuitarNoise is all about, guitarists helping one another. It is a brotherhood (and sisterhood too).

Nice little amp. Volume is simply the volume control for your clean tones. But if you want overdrive or distortion to play heavy music like Metal, then use the Gain control to dial in the amount of overdrive or distortion.
For Blues you might turn gain to 2 or 3 just to get a little dirty sound. Then for modern Grunge type distortion you would turn it to 11! (Spinal Tap)

And there is so much you can do with the tone controls as well. For instance to get a real Metal tone you might try turning Bass and Treble to max., but turn Mid all the way down. Then Gain to maximum. But if you wanted a good Blues tone you might turn Bass to 4 or 5, Treble to 6 or 7, and Mid all the way up to 10. These are just some common settings. You just need to experiment and find tones and distortions that are pleasing to you.
