I have really been going back to basics lately and working on some of the things I didn't spend a lot of time on in the last 3 months (one of them is the metronome with my strumming! )
Yesterday & today I really have been working on my hammer-on's and pull-off's and of course there is a song (or 2) involved. The first one is Led Zeppelin's Over the Hills and Far Away. Here is the tab I am using:
EDIT
The Tab is all messed up!...Please go to the links I provided to see the tab in the right format. Sorry!

Now all of the practice drills I have done in the past had the index finger fretting a string while you hammer-on with the other 3 fingers. Unfortunately this left the index finger unworked. Also I don't have a lot of "meat" on the tip of my index finger so when I hit the string sometimes it just grazes the string. The other fingers (even the pinky {at least on the treble strings}) seem to be right on track. Does anyone have any practice drills that work the index finger for hammer-on's & pull-offs?
The second song is one I already know the beginning version of and that's Wanted Dead Or Alive by Bon Jovi. I am adding the following parts to the song:
This is the verse part. Play twice during the verse.
It's all the same only the... change
D C G
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
e:-2-------2-----2-|-3p2p0---0h2-----|-------0-----3---|-------3---------|

D:-0-------0-----0-|-0-------0-------|-2-----------0---|-------------0---|

E:-----------------|-----------------|-------------3---|-----------------|
This comes at the beginning of the verse. I am having problems with the pull-off's while holding the D chord Actually the Dsus2 chord...(YES the D chord...which I DO play MUCH beter now  !). Whenever I go to do the pull-off's I either pull the high E string right off the fretboard (mostly with the pinky) or the ring finger deaden's the high E string while pulling-off with my middle finger.
I don't feel that either of these songs are that complicated (at least the parts I have shown here) and I should be able to play fairly easily if I can overcome these obstacles. However just so you know I am doing both on the acoustic so it IS harder..that way when I try them on the electric it will be MUCh easier (I hope!).
Thanks
I was just thinking that if I am hammering-on the 2nd fret maybe I am in the first position and should be doing the hammer-on with my 2nd (middle) finger?
Hey mikespe,
I fixed the tab. Just use the code button when posting tab and it will come out in a fixed font.

Thanks Nick...I knew there had to be a way!
Mike,
When I play over the hills, I hammer the 2nd fret with my index. That way I can catch the 4th fret with my ring finger (easier for me)
Guess you can say I play it in the second position.
Mike: a simple and easy drill you could try. Play this tabE|-----------------------------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------------------------0h1h2h3h4p3p2p1p0---|
A|--------------------0h1h2h3h4p3p2p1p0----------------------|
E|-0h1h2h3h4p3p2p1p0-----------------------------------------|
and when that works try this:
E|-----------------------------------------------------------|
B|-----------------------------------------------------------|
G|-----------------------------------------------------------|
D|---------------------3p1p0h2h4-----------------------------|
A|-----------4p1h3p0h2---------------------------------------|
E|-0h4p2h3p1---------------------|---------------------------|
Play the top stringds with the patterns from the bottom strings.
Thanks Arjen...I'll try it as soon as my back stops hurting! :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x
you can always play laying down.
During the pull-offs my fingers don't have anything to "hook" onto the strings with. They just slide right off the string without producing any sound?
I am doing this song:
G
+ + + + + + + + + + + +
e:---------------------|---------3-----3-|---3-3-------------------|
B:---------------------|---------3-----3-|---3-3-------------------|
G:---------0h2p0-------|-0-------0-----0-|---0-0---0h2p0---------0-|

A:---------------------|---------2-----2-|---2-2-------------------|
E:---------------------|---------3-----3-|---3-3-------------------|
D G
+ + + + + + + + + + + +
e:-----------------2---|---2-2-2-------------|---------3-----3-|
B:-----------------3---|---3-3-3-------------|---------3-----3-|

D:---------0-------0---|---0-0-0---------4p0-|---------0-----0-|
A:---------------------|---------------------|---------2-----2-|
E:---------------------|---------------------|---------3-----3-|
I can do pull-offs on the high E and B strings but that's it. How are you supposed to "pluck" the string during a pull-off on the "wound" strings?
Thanks
I think the problem might be because I am trying to do a pull-off on the 2nd fret where the tension on the string is tighter. Down by the 4th and 5th fret is much easier...Plus I have .11's on my acoustic. I haven't tried the electric yet but I'll bet having .09's on there will make it much easier at the 2nd fret...
Any ideas if I am correct in my assumption?
thanks
I think your on the right track.. I am by no means an expert at pulloffs, although I do them pretty well, but it is much harder on my acoustic to do a pull off on the 1st or 2nd fret and the low E string...

Yeah, there's a little more tension on the 2nd than the 4th. It's just a matter of practice, though.
Curious - I've never looked at tab for that tune. I learned it off the album way back when, and I don't play the F# pulled off to a D - I pick the D, followed by the open G, both on one downstroke with a bit of separation.
It's a small phrasing thing, I know... I'll have to put the album on later today :)

Thanks Noteboat...I like your way better! Sounds easier! 8)
