I undertsand most people play (eg. x5777x) with their ring finger on all the 7s. But I heard if you bend a finger past the joint, then it dramatically increases your chance of arthritis.
I find it uncomfortable to play like this anyway, but I understand the benefits.
I wouldn't want something to stop me from playing when I've played for long enough to actually know how to play.
So any views on this key issue?

Take a look at Keefs fingers sometime. I'm sure he suffers but I think the trade off is worth it. Play smarter not harder.

nonsense. all you get is a sore finger until the muscle builds tone.
yes, the finger dishes out or bends a bit , but Ive had no problems. (40yrs and going strong).
a new plaayer will feel discomfort for sure. and looking at a finger bending backwards can look funny.
but there really isnt anything to worry over.
or fret about;)

yeah. here's proof from a couple of geezers that can play guitar AND type.
thx twisted;)
Again, not true about increased chance of arthritis. In fact, you're more likely to have increased chance of arthritis with LESS joint range.
Increased joint range carries a risk of joint instability, which can certainly contribute to arthritis, however as the muscular control improves this provides the dynamic stability to the joint.

It's a question of flexibility and control...
Look at gymnasts... If any random bloke off the street tried to twist themselves into some of those positions, He'd end up in a hospital bed... But if you slowly stretch and strengthen your way there, then your body will adapt to perform anything you ask of it...
Just train yourself consistently, working slowly to the point of slight discomfort...
if you feel pain you should STOP and reassess your technique..
Before you know it, it will be a piece of cake... Until you find another uncomfortable shape to work on
Good Luck.

let's talk callouses!. it's amazing that my finger prints show thru those monsters.
and isnt it disconcerting when after a long shower they turn white and peel.
good thing fresh callouses live underneath.
