Hi there.

The son of a friend of mine has just started playing the guitar, and he has been bought a 3/4 Yamaha Pacifica.

I have a couple of questions about 3/4 guitars:

1. Do they tune to the same pitch as a full size guitar (Open E)?

2. Can you get an acceptable sound out of them, and would it benefit from a proper setup at a shop, or is it not worth it?

Cheers in advance!

Hiya,

I have students using 3/4 size Classicals. The only thing they suffer from is not being able to put out full-size volume. Otherwise:

Yes - they tune to the same pitch as a full-size guitar

Yes - you can get a reasonable sound out of them. As to whether paying for a setup is worth it, the answer is "maybe" - your friend's son is going to outgrow his guitar in a couple of years.

Best,

A :-)
