I have been working with "D D d D d D" where the little d is a short downstroke between beats as recommended by my lesson book.
It just does not sound right. Any ideas?

I play it as a straight one and two and three and four and, all downstrokes. Then you can rock it up in the lengthy outro. Play along with the CD and you'll pick it up easily.
