I'm about to get a guitar that's s/s/s. But I kinda like the metal/gritty sound.
My question is:
Can I still pull off that sort of tune with a decent amp? or should I reconsider getting this guitar?

Thanks in advance!

What are some good guitars with the S/S/H combination?

In my own opinion. A Fender Fat Strat.

You "might" get the sound you want with a Solidstate amp (with the s/s/s). A good distortion pedal would help also.

You could swap the bridge SC pup for a humbucker in SC form - takes up the same space, so no carpentry. If you get one that is splittable, you'll need to get a push/pull pot to switch it.
Other than that, about 30 minutes installation time

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.
Did you know that the word "gullible" is not in any dictionary?

In mu humble opinion, you can get a real loud and distorted rock tone with ANY guitar. A few days ago I saw Di-rect (purely by accident, honestly!), and they were using a Gibson semi-hollowbody (ES335?) and a Fender telecaster. If you can rock with that, you can do it with a strat as well.

I agree with that. Don't worry about your pickups if you're distorting them anyway. Within reason, I mean, really lousy pickups will be all hummy and microphonic and unclear, but humbuckers and single coils are both servicable.
