General question on fingering practices. As I expand my base of songs I'm learning/practicing I find myself playing more on frets 12 through 15. I'm new and up until now I've played with the "one finger per fret" rule, however, I find it very difficult to cleanly transition and sound notes with my pinky as I move up the fretboard.

This has probably been asked a million times already, but do folks generally substitute using their ring finger for their pinky as the frets get closer together?

Thanks

Nope - it just gets confusing to have two different regimes depending on where you are up the neck.

Keep using your pinky. I see so many players who substituted and used their ring finger instead of their pinky for a lot of things during their beginner guitar days. I think down the road, not developing your pinky is very detrimental to your guitar playing. You have 4 fingers, I think it just makes sense to learn to use all of them (almost) equally well.
