I am new to the forum and to guitar playing, but from what I have been reading, this looks like the place to be. I have only been playing for a short time, learning country and bluegrass. I have an Ovation acoustic 1112 Deluxe Balladeer and an Ovation acoustic/electric 4861 Deluxe Balladeer, I really like the quality and sound that the Ovations have. But now I am thinking that I would like to pick up an electric, so I can learn to play more lead. I am wanting a Hollow body but with limited funds and not really knowing alot about the different brands, I am hoping that you guys can help out. Of the brands that I have listed below, who makes the better guitar, that will last....

Ibanez
Wasburn
Epiphone
Squier
Michael Kelly

Thanks in adavance!!

Hey there WMWISE,

Welcome to GN. I don't think you can go wrong with any of those brands you listed. I'm surprised you want a Hollow Body though as the "TELE" style seems to be the favorite for Country.

My recommendation would to visit a GC or large Box type guitar store and try some of them out.

Obviously you want something that looks good, but also something that "FITS" you well, somethng that Feels good in your hands. I think its important to "Test Drive" as many as you can before you buy.

Then just for my own personal preference I'd see if one my local, Mom & Pop shops have one or if not if they could order one and buy from the Smaller Business folks... I just like supporting local small busines but I go to Guitar Center at least once a month to see, play, test out newer stuff.

Good luck and share with us what you end up getting.

Cheers

Welcome.

If you were referring to a Michael Kelly electric, I would highly recommend them. Very nice instrument for the money.

Yes, I'd play as many instruments as you can to see what fits you best.

FYI, if you like Ovation, their elctric line is HAMER. Same parent company as Ovation. The Hamer import guitars - especially those from Korea - are very nice guitars with high quality.

Ibanez do a nice line the artcore series, you might want to check out Gretsch as well, they do have a budget line. On the other hand you might want a cheap, but good tele now, and a better Gretsch hollowbody latter. The Gretsches are definately associated with country and even more so rockabilly.

Epiphones do lots of nice hollow bodies, but for country I'd suggest a Squier Tele

Please tell your budget range. That may helps us.

As for the Hollowbodies , i would recommend Epiphone Casino. Its a time tested guitar and Beatles favourite.

Thanks for all of the great advice!! Just getting started, I was looking to send around 400.00
I was leaning towards an Ibanez or Epiphone, the ones that I have tried out at the local music shop had the sound and feel that I like. I am into the older Texas swing style music, and the hollow body just seems to me to have the sound that I like.

Thanks
Bill

Hi Bill & welcome to GN!

I would highly recomend checking out the Ibanez Artcore hollow body guitars. Great playability & tone, and most would fit right in with your budget. Just make sure you play eveything you can and the right one will pick you!

Wmwise: Ibanez and Epiphone are definitely the two most favourite hollow-body brands on GN. I personally went with the Ibanez AF75s, mostly because the Epi hollows are relatively expensive over here. Truth be told I doubt you could go wrong with either an Epi Dot or Ibby Artcore: both are very consistent lines offering excellent quality for the money.

I have a few guitars, I love my Artcore Ibanez AG75..similar to Arjen's. I do probably 90% of my playing on that axe. It can sound mellow or growl and I think it is a quality guitar (was going to say for the money but won't) have absolutley no complaints about it. I also have a Godin exit 22, a little more tone variation as it has an HSS config. ie Humbucker, single, single pickups also a good guitar but due to the weight I tend to leave it on it's hangar. Also a quality guitar in my opinion. But like they say try before you buy. My opinion of what is a nice player may not suit you at all.

Everyone states this about the Artcores and it is true. I have one and it is great. I would get another.
