You can't just pick up a guitar and start playing anything without knowing a little theory. Study the pentatonic scales and go from there. Playing solos on acoustic is kinda hard. I think its an instrument built for what you called strumming. I think your best bet would be to learn some scales IE pentatonic minors are easy. But to really make the notes come alive you will have to use bends and again, thats tough with an acoustic

Why not learn chords?? You dont HAVE to strum them. Fingerstyle still uses chord shapes, you just play them in bits and pieces, insted of together. As a example check out the lessons here on Dust in the wind. Wile that song is clearly all finger style playing, making chord shapes is a huge part of the song, and if you dont know them, or how to change them quickly, and smoothly, youll never get the song down. Also many fingerstyle songs do have some strumming in them, and if not a little strum or two to fill up a space can realy wake up a song. On top of that I think [and maybe its just me..] but learning to strum diferent rythem patterns, realy builds up your skills in making a song sound good... eaven if your doing finger picking.

It comes down to the fact that there are realy no shortcuts. You need to walk before you run. Unless your going to be happy with copying one or two simple songs for the rest of your playing life.. you realy need to learn at least some basic chords.

you're wrong. you have to learn the chords. you can fingerpick them, you don't have to strum them, but you can't play the guitar without learning chords.

I agree. you must know a few chords. as all the notes of any melody is found within the chord.

That's like saying I want to learn to play the guitar but please don't suggest putting stings on it, I want to learn to play without strings. You don't have to strum them but they will help you so much.
