Hi people,

I've recently bought a Fender deluxe 90 and it doesn't have a headphone or line out socket. The only output is preamp out.
I want to be able to use headphones when playing at night... I know if I had a line out, I could connect to the line in on my pc & use headphones that way but can I do the same using preamp out or is that a bad idea? Can I connect headphones directly using preamp out?

I thought I would seek some advice before attemping either of the 2 above options as I don't want to blow up my amp... Or myself for that matter.

Thanks in advance,

Chris.

Most line outs are preamp outs. Should work just the same.

This is from the manual for your amp:
"PRE OUT - This unbalanced jack provides an
output signal from the preamp. It may be used to
drive effects units in an effects loop, to drive
additional amplifiers in a multi-amp set up, or as a
preamp send to a mixing console."

Since you can use it to send a signal to a mixer, you should be okay using it to hook up to your PC or to a headphone amp. (To be safe, turn the amp's volume down all the way first, then gradually build it up until you get a good level.) It probably won't power headphones by itself, though.

Hope that helps.

That won't silence the speaker, though......or am I wrong on this?

On the drive channel, the amp has a drive (i.e. gain) knob and a volume knob. You could try hooking up the phones (via phone amp, mixer or pc) and turn the volume knob to 0. Use the drive knob for volume.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

PRE OUT is not meant for driving headphones. Get yourself a headphone amp. You can plug your guitar directly into it, or plug the PRE OUT into it.
