I have always struggled using a pick , I found by picking bass notes and fiddling with the other strings with in a chord then one down strum is really helping ym rhythmn .

say your playing an open G

1 pick the top string ( E ) with thumb

2 pick any other 3 strings in that chord in any order with fingers

3 one down strum

change chords

to say

Am

repeat process

I have recorded myself doing this , and I think it sounds pretty cool

Now since I have always tried to use a pick I always struggled with rythmn , but since I started doing this my timming is improving
by no means is it terrific but it's improving .

Just thought I would share my latest discovery and my lastest achievement , since I was seriously thinking about giving this guitar playing away until I discovered this ..

On my link there is song called Key of C - this what I am talking about

Here is to you as good as you are
And here is to me as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are as bad as I am

I too have experiemented with combining picking and strumming in a chord progression, and
when you get it right you can really make some nice little tunes!

And anything that helps you play better can't be bad! :)

There is no one way to pick or even fingerpick the guitar. Some fingerpickers use the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Some use the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers (the method I use). And some even use all the fingers.

I studied Ragtime guitar many years ago and at one time was pretty good at it. In Ragtime the thumb usually plays the top 3 bass strings with downstrokes, the index plays the G string, the middle plays the B string, and the ring plays the high E string using all upstrokes. When there is more than one note on a string you play with just one finger.

E E7

e------0---------0------------
b------0--------------3p---0--
g----------0h-1---------------
d----------0------------------
a-----------------------------
e---0------------------0------

t r i r m m
m t t

t= thumb
i= index
m= middle
r= ring
p= pinky

The letters below the tab show which finger(s) you pick with. Notice the last two notes on the B string are played with the middle finger.

This is just one popular way to fingerpick, there are many others.

And there are some good electric guitarists who fingerpick such as Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, and Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.

So if you want to fingerpick, go for it, even an electric. :D

If you know something better than Rock and Roll, I'd like to hear it - Jerry Lee Lewis
