do different pickups have different sounds? what are the best quality? i appreciate the info, thanks!

Yes pretty much all pickups have a different sound. Some people like the brighter single coil pickups, others like the warmer sound of humbuckers. As for the type of each kind of pickup there are many to choose from. General consesus is that seymour duncan makes some nice pickups but they have plenty of models to choose from jazz pickups to metal all with a different sound. The best thing to do is to hear some of the pickups and see which you like the best.
