In reading tabs i've never been able to figure out what the x's symbolize. Someone told me it was palm mute or something of that nature, i'm not quite sure. Could someone clear this up for me?

Thanks in advance.

It depends on the context.
Mostly if in strait tab it is a muted string.
If it is a chord box it can also mean simply that that string is not played.
Some would play it as a percussive stroke.

Yes, it is a mute. There are different kinds of "mute's", depending on the mute, you can palm mute, lightly depress the strings you are fretting or lay your fretting hand across the strings.

It depends on the piece and what you are going to next.
