Hi,
I'm working through Mel Bays Modern Guitar Method. I'm sort of up to the 8th notes section. Its series of excersises of playing 1/4 notes and 1/8 notes.

My question is when playing a note on an open string that is followed by a rest, do i mute the string?

1/4 G 1/4 G 1/8 G 1/8 R 1/4 G 1/8 G 1/8 G

I suppose the question of how to 'play' the rests applies to any length of note.

The book is sparse on text, part of the reason I like the book! I have no one to hand to ask. - I know i should look at getting lessons too...

Yes, you mute the string - and yes, it applies to any length of note.
