I was just wondering if you playing in the key of C for example is it ok to use any C scale like Major, Minor, Pentatonic, Mixolydian, Dorian, ect. And also to mix them up ?

P.s I found a very good site for chords and scales just click on advanced guitar room. http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/guitar/index_rb.html

Thanx

Yes, more or less. You need to think about how to mix them up though. You can't mix them up indiscriminately. Play around with them. For example, it's easy to mix up the Dorian and the pentatonic minor, but the Dorian and the major might not work so well. Experiment with them over the chords and listen for what sounds right.

Scales are just tools to give you an idea of some core notes you could use, but that's it. Pentatonic minor/major mixing is almost a standard in blues/bluesrock and adding notes from the major/minor scale is pretty standard though. If you feel like hitting a note you should do just that, no matter what scale it belongs to.

I'm doing some thing or rather like that, I sometimes prefer the sound of them to a regular chord. I get the patterns confused sometimes, dang muscle memory, just isn't kickin' in!!! :P JK
