alright. i can play the 12-bar blues shuffle pretty well, and if i put the capo on down about the 5th fret and more towards the body, i can play the V shuffle on octave higher (on the D/G strings instead of E/A). now i want to learn how to play over rhythm, as a 'lead guitar.' Which scales should i learn? i know there's the major and minor pentatonic, and the blues, but which ones should i focus on?
and from what i've read, there seems to be a pattern to the fingerings on the fretboard. can anyone explain that? and finally, would it be considered 'cheating' if i put on a capo. In Arjen's article about blues improv, for example, all strings on the fifth fret are used. . . can I put a capo on the first fret? Since their on the fifth fret, couldn't those notes be put on a higher, open string?
any help, especially on the first question, would be great. i just want to learn where to start practicing.

Have a look at Arjen's lesson on Blues Solo Improvisation.
