A question of curiosity....I have inherited two very nice twenty year old Guitars. One I know, from the attendent documents left in the case, has a solid Spruce top. The other I know, by asking the builder, has a laminated Spruce top.
Question: The look and feel inside and out are the same at least to me. If I didn't have any info. or documentation how could I know a solid top from a laminated top? If I was buying a used one as a Christmas present for a friend...how would I be sure? Can I tell just by looking or feeling?

Looking at the top where the soundhole is gives it away. You might need a small mirror to help you look straight at the edge of the wood - if you see straight thin bands (the laminating adhesive) that go all the way around, it's laminated.

Solid tops may have thin lines from wood grain, but they won't go all the way around in the same plane.
