As I'm sure a few will know, I've become a little bit obcessed with Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb recently!  Now I've finally moved into the realm of the second solo, the range of notes is quite considerable, from fret 7 on the 4th string right up to (bent up to at least) fret 22 on the 1st string. The problem I'm finding is that the high end stuff up at frest 17 and above are noticeably quieter than that lower down the board. I find it hard to believe that it's my fretting . . . do I need to try and strike the strings harder, or is there another solution to this problem?

Thanks. :)

Rob

A compressor would probably help. A compressor attenuates or cuts loud notes and boosts quieter notes to give a very balanced sound. Here is a good video that demonstrates how a compressor works:

Not sure how pertinant this is, but Gilmour uses active EMG pick-ups. Might have a teeny something to do with it.

Hello. Im new to the board but I wanted to respond to this thread with one thing. It is true that David uses EMG Active pickups on his Red Strat in the 80's and 90's. However, When you listen to the album version of comfortably numb, He is using passive pickups. A great GREAT sight to go to regarding Gilmour's sound is http://www.gilmourish.com . It explains everything used in every song. Gilmour only used the Active pickups to cut through all the EM interferance on thier huge and gigantically lit stage shows during the Post Waters incarnation of PF. He recently went back to using predominatly Passive PUP strats because, as he says, the EMGs sound too much like humbuckers and not like a strat.

Not to say the EMG setup isnt nice. Its a great and very flexible setup. It just doesnt sound like a strat and it doesnt sound like the Wall's Guitars. To hear the EMGs listen to any live recordings of post waters PF. (They do sound great!)

just my 2c

Cheers for the replies everyone. :)

I have been messing around with the amp quite a lot now, experimenting with compression etc., but I am finding it seems to kill the tone a bit. So as a result, I'm sticking to the same effects, but I've cranked the gain up a bit and turned the guitar volume down a touch, seems to have done the trick. :)
