Hey guys,

I've been working on a song, and it's got quite a lot of slides in it (This is acoustic by the way). And I find whenever I slide up the neck, I get a really loud squeak off the strings which ends up being louder than my note!

So then I go back and I do just the slide a few times to "work on it" and it is fine! It seems to be happening when I hold the on finger on a string in the same spot for a awhile, when I go to move it's a little stuck?

I'm just wondering if anyone has any sliding hints or clues or something, if not an outright fix.

perhaps you are playing to tense? try to relax and just let the song flow. or try starting out slow and working up your pace until you can do it effortlessly. that may help

sounds like the slide is hitting the frets and then making the strings slide around creating a sound. Gotta play it lighter. I have this problem sometimes when playing electrics not set up to play slide but rather to play fast lead lines. Its annoying. Oh well. Practice makes perfect (its annoying i know, but its still true).

There are a couple of things. Try cleaning your strings and use Fret Ease. It will lubricate the strings, so that your fingers won't stick.
Also try washing your hands before you play.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

Matthew, when you say there's a lot of slides in the song, it sounds to me like you're playing with your fingers rather than actually playing slide guitar.....

Sounds like the advice you got already was pretty good, I think Izzy thought you were playing with a slide......

I did as well at first.....

How about you tell us what song it is, maybe that'll give us a better idea...

Vic

PS - never heard of Fret Ease, Graham, do tell more.......

Oh, thanks for the correction Vic. Whoops.

In that case use a string lubricant. Smooth your calluses with a fine emery board/buffing block. That will do. What song is it by the way?

Sorry, lads, too early in the morning, I meant Fast Fret.

I started with nothing - and I've still got most of it left.

It's "Better Man" by Perl Jam, in the intro you do the little rif then slide up 2 frets, do it again, and then slide back down ~4 times or so.

My down slides are terrible, my fingers won't stay rigid enough (practice practice practice) and my up slides squeak.

What is this calus smoothing? That could be it, mine are really rough.

I'm going to try some of this stuff over the next week (vacation). So I'll check back on this thread mid-week or so when I'm back for a day.

Thanks for the help!
